The physical, chemical and mechanical properties of Unplasticized-PVC (UPVC) and Chlorinated-PVC (CPVC)
pipes and fittings demonstrate their superiority in utility and applications over conventional materials.

(a) Density
CPVC has density 1.55 g / cm3 . UPVC has a density of approx. 1.43g/cm3.
As such it is less than 1/6th the weight of cast iron and steel, making it much cheaper to transport and easier to handle during installation.

(b) Mechanical Strength
The tensile, flexural and compressive strength of UPVC / CPVC is around 550Kg/cm2 making it suitable even under varying conditions.

(c) Electrical Resistance
UPVC / CPVC has a resistivity of greater than 1014, and has good insulating properties. UPVC/ CPVC Pipes cannot be used for earthing.


(d) Low Thermal Conductivity
UPVC / CPVC has thermal conductivity of 0.14hwm/k/m2 , which is only a fraction of thermal conductivity of steel. This enables fluids to be transported maintaining the uniform fluid temperature. It also ensures that there is no outward sweating of pipes when fluids at very low temperature are passing through them.

(e) Hygienic
UPVC / CPVC are resistant to attack by fungi and are not subjected to contamination. Smooth inner surface do not support any growth, encrustation or fuming, thereby no odor or taste is transmitted to the fluid being transmitted. Further the pipes are resistant to any type of corrosion or rusting. These properties are of prime importance for the transportation of potable water to towns and villages.

(f) Hydraulic Resistance and Flow Characteristics
UPVC / CPVC pipes, due to their smooth inner surface allow greater flow of water than an identical size of conventional piping. The Hazen-Williams constant for flow in UPVC / CPVC pipes is around 150, which is higher than that of conventional pipes and it remains constant for the entire service life.

(g) Chemical Resistance
UPVC / CPVC is unaffected by most concentrations of acids, alkalis, organic chemicals, fats and oils. This resistance to corrosion by most chemicals makes them indispensable for contemporary applications in various sectors of Industry. May be seen in page no.24 & 25 to the chemical resistance chart.

(h) Flexibility
Being a thermoplastic material, UPVC / CPVC is better able to withstand deformation in shape due to earth movements.

(i) Galvanic and Electrolytic immunity
Unlike metallic pipes which need special surface coating to resist electrolytic action, UPVC/CPVC being non conductor of electricity, is totally immune to galvanic and electrolytic attack. This also ensures that there is no scaling of salts on the inner surface.

(j) Fire Resistance
These material are self-extinguishing in nature and do not support combustion. Only the part of the pipes directly under the flame gets charred and do not extend the fire.

(k) Cold Welding Joint
The lengths can be cut to required lengths and joined easily by cold welding process, without laborious threading operations.

Note: UPVC means unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, also referred to as rigid PVC pipe. The word rigid does not explain its structure, but defines a property, which is self-explanatory.
